🗓️ 1. There’s no bad time. There are tradeoffs.
Every month has something going for it. Every month has something working against it. The “best” time depends on what you’re optimizing for.
This guide breaks it down honestly — crowds, climate, wildlife, and road conditions — so you can decide based on your actual priorities.

☀️ 2. Dry season (November – April): the comfortable choice
Peak high season: December – April + July/August
The dry season is when most travelers visit, and for good reason:
Temperatures: Warm but manageable, especially December–February. February is the sweet spot — cool mornings, comfortable afternoons, low humidity.
Rain: Minimal. The jungle road stays dry and the ruins are easy to navigate.
Wildlife: Still excellent. Animals concentrate around remaining water sources, which can actually make sightings more predictable.
Crowds: This is the tradeoff. December through April sees the highest visitor numbers. Still far fewer people than Chichén Itzá on a quiet Tuesday, but you’ll share the ruins with more groups than in low season.
💡 February is the single best month if you want good weather and reasonable crowds. Cool, dry, and the jungle is still lush from the previous rainy season.
🌧️ 3. Rainy season (May – October): underrated
Low season: May/June and September/October
The rainy season has a reputation it doesn’t entirely deserve.
What actually happens:
Rain typically falls in the afternoon, not all day. Morning visits (which you should be doing anyway) are usually dry.
The jungle turns intensely green. Waterholes fill. Flora and fauna are at their peak.
Wildlife activity increases — particularly birds and mammals near water.
The archaeological site itself is surrounded by green in every direction from Structure II. The views are spectacular.
What to expect:
Higher humidity, especially June and October
Insects are more active — long sleeves and repellent become essential, not optional
Fewer visitors — in May, June, and September you may have the ruins almost entirely to yourself
💡 If you want to be the only person at the site, come in May, June, or September. The ruins to yourself, the road through the jungle to yourself, the howler monkeys performing for an audience of one.
🌡️ 4. Temperature reality check
Month | Avg. high | Notes |
December – February | 28–32°C | Best weather. Bring a light layer for early mornings |
March – April | 33–36°C | Hot, dry. Leave very early for the ruins |
May – June | 34–37°C | Hot and humid. Afternoon rain. Go at dawn |
July – August | 32–35°C | High season returns. Slightly cooler than June |
September – October | 30–34°C | Wettest months. Fewest visitors |
November | 29–33°C | Transition month. Good wildlife, dropping humidity |

The rule regardless of season: arrive at the ruins before 9 AM. By midday, the heat inside the site is significant.
🚧 5. Road conditions year-round
The 60 km jungle road inside the Reserve is passable year-round. It’s narrow and sinuous — that’s its nature, not a seasonal condition.
The tree canopy creates shifting shadow patterns on the road surface that can be visually confusing, especially at speed. Drive slowly. If you’re not comfortable with jungle driving, consider going with a driver or certified tour from Xpujil.
💡 The best option in any season: arrive the night before at Casa Ka’an, leave at dawn, let someone else handle the driving. Ka’an Expeditions offers guided transport from Xpujil.
🗓️ 6. Quick reference: when to go for what
Priority | Best months |
Best weather (coolest, driest) | February |
Fewest visitors | May, June, September |
Best wildlife activity | May–June, October–November |
Best birdwatching | November–March |
High season (book ahead) | December–April, July–August |
🏡 7. One practical note about booking
Casa Ka’an has 12 cabins. During high season (December–April), they fill up — sometimes weeks in advance. During low season, walk-ins are often possible.
If you’re planning around specific dates, book early. If you’re flexible, low season offers better availability and a quieter experience.
