💰 1. There isn’t one entrance fee. There are three.

This surprises more visitors than it should.

To reach the Calakmul archaeological site, you pass through three separate checkpoints, each run by a different authority, each requiring its own payment. All cash. No card readers. No exceptions.

Withdraw in Xpujil before heading out. There are no ATMs after town.

⚠️ The Conhuas gate closes at 2:30 PM. If you arrive after that, you cannot enter the Reserve. Plan your departure from Xpujil accordingly — leaving by 7 AM gives you comfortable margin.

🎟️ 3. Discounts and exemptions

Ejido Conhuas (community checkpoint):

  • 50% discount for teachers, students, INAPAM cardholders, children under 10, and people with disabilities

  • Must show valid credential

CONANP (Biosphere Reserve):

  • Free: Children under 12, people with disabilities, INAPAM cardholders, retirees and pensioners

  • 75% discount: Students and teachers with valid credentials

  • 50% discount: Mexican nationals and foreign residents (with official document)

INAH (Archaeological site):

  • Free: Visitors over 60, children under 13, retirees, pensioners, teachers, and active students — all with valid credentials

  • Free for all Mexican nationals on Sundays with official ID

💡 If you qualify for any exemption, bring your credential. The savings are significant — especially at the CONANP checkpoint where the standard foreign visitor price is $225 MXN.

🕒 4. The schedule that determines your day

The three checkpoints have different opening and closing times, which effectively defines your visit window:

  • Earliest you can enter the Reserve: 5:00 AM (Conhuas gate opens)

  • Site hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

  • Recommended departure from Xpujil: Before 7:00 AM

  • Recommended arrival at site: Before 9:00 AM (beat the heat and any groups)

The drive from Xpujil to the site is approximately 2 hours (50 km paved highway + 60 km jungle road at 30 km/h).

💵 5. Cash logistics

The last reliable ATM is in Xpujil. Withdraw there before heading into the Reserve.

There is a new gas station in Conhuas near the Reserve entrance, but no ATM there. Don’t count on finding cash beyond Xpujil.

Bring a little extra — exact change isn’t required, but having the right amounts speeds up the process at each checkpoint.

🧳 6. What the entrance fee gets you

For the price, you get access to:

  • The 60 km jungle drive through one of the most biodiverse stretches of road in Mexico

  • The Calakmul archaeological site with 6,000+ structures, including the two main pyramids

  • Wildlife sightings — deer, turkeys, monkeys, and possibly one of the five wild cat species that inhabit the Reserve

  • The experience of a UNESCO Mixed World Heritage Site with almost no other visitors

For context: a day pass to a major theme park in Mexico costs more.

🏡 7. One more thing

The box lunch at Casa Ka’an is $120 MXN. It’s ready before 7 AM. There’s nothing to buy inside the Reserve.

That’s the full budget for the day: entrance fees + box lunch + gas = one of the most extraordinary archaeological experiences in Mexico.
