🌿 1. Calakmul doesn't happen by accident
Calakmul is not a place you stumble upon. It takes intention — and that's exactly what makes arriving feel like something.
This guide covers every realistic way to reach Xpujil, the town that serves as the practical base for exploring the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and its ancient ruins. We'll also cover the final 110 km from Xpujil to the archaeological site itself — through jungle that is, without exaggeration, part of the experience.
🗺️ 2. Where exactly is Xpujil?
Xpujil is the municipal seat of Calakmul, located on Federal Highway 186 — the main road crossing the south of Campeche state. It's the last town with gas stations, ATMs, restaurants, and services before heading into the Reserve.
Not sure what Calakmul actually is — municipality, reserve, or archaeological site? This guide breaks it down clearly.
Whatever direction you're coming from, your route passes through here.
🚗 3. Getting to Xpujil by car
Driving gives you the most flexibility — especially for the final jungle stretch. Here are the main routes:
Origin | Route | Distance | Approx. time |
Chetumal | Highway 186 west | 120 km | 1 h 45 min |
Bacalar | Highway 186 west | 130 km | 1.5–2 h |
Tulum | Highway 307 south → 186 west | ~300 km | ~4 h |
Playa del Carmen | Highway 307 south → 186 west | ~360 km | ~5 h |
Campeche city | Highway 186 east via Escárcega | 290 km | 4 h |
Mérida | Mérida → Campeche → 186 east | 400 km | 5–6 h |
Palenque | Highway 186 east | 360 km | 5 h |
Driving tips:
Fill up before leaving any major city. Xpujil is your last reliable stop before the Reserve.
Download offline maps — cell signal disappears inside the jungle.
Avoid driving at night, especially between Escárcega and Xpujil.
🏡 Casa Ka'an is 5 km west of Xpujil, right on Highway 186 toward the Calakmul turnoff. Breakfast from 6:15 AM, box lunches ready before you head out.
Alternative route from Mérida: Via Uxmal and the Ruta de los Chenes — more scenic, passes lesser-known archaeological sites, but road conditions are irregular. Daylight only, high-clearance vehicle recommended.
🚌 4. Getting there without a car
By bus
ADO operates comfortable, reliable coach service to Xpujil from Mérida, Campeche, Escárcega, and Chetumal. Schedules and tickets at ado.com.mx.
⚠️ International cards sometimes fail on ADO's website. Buying at the terminal avoids this issue.
Once in Xpujil, you'll need a private taxi or a certified tour to reach the archaeological site — there's no public transport covering the 110 km into the Reserve.
By plane
The closest airport is Chetumal International Airport (CTM), 120 km from Xpujil. Aeroméxico, Volaris, and VivaAerobús fly daily from Mexico City.
From Chetumal: rent a car or arrange private transport to Xpujil (90 km / ~1 h 30 min).
🚆 5. Tren Maya: useful, with one critical warning
Xpujil has a Tren Maya station connecting it to Palenque, Campeche, Bacalar, and Cancún. It's a genuine option — but most travelers don't know about this:
⚠️ There are TWO stations associated with Calakmul on the Tren Maya map.
Always book the Xpujil station — not the "Calakmul" station.
The "Calakmul" station is isolated, has no services or taxis, and leaves you stranded 60 km from town with no way to continue.
Tren Maya schedules change frequently. Check current times at trenmaya.gob.mx before building your trip around it.
🌳 6. From Xpujil to the ruins: the last 110 km
Once you're in Xpujil, the archaeological site is still 110 km away. Here's how that breaks down:
First 50 km: Wide paved road heading south toward the Reserve entrance.
At km 97: The turnoff. Pay entrance fees here — road narrows from this point.
Final 60 km: Jungle road at 30 km/h. Not because it's rough, but because you're inside a living biosphere. Wildlife crossings are common. The whole feel of the road changes.
Budget at least 1 hour for this stretch, more on your first visit.
Practical notes for this segment:
⛽ Fill up in Xpujil. There's a new gas station in Conhuas near the Reserve entrance, but treat Xpujil as your last reliable stop.
🕕 Leave before 7 AM. Arrive before the heat and before tour groups from outside the region.
🦜 On the return, watch for animal crossings in late afternoon — the tree canopy creates difficult light.
🎒 No car? Private taxi from Xpujil or a certified tour with Ka'an Expeditions — they handle transport, guide, and entrance logistics. Guests of Casa Ka'an get 10% off.

💰 7. Entrance fees (2026)
Three separate checkpoints, all cash only. No ATMs inside the Reserve.
Checkpoint | Mexican nationals | International visitors |
Conhuas community | $90 MXN | $90 MXN |
Biosphere Reserve (CONANP) | $110 MXN | $215 MXN |
Archaeological site (INAH) | $100 MXN | $100 MXN |
Total | ~$300 MXN | ~$405 MXN |
Student, teacher, and senior discounts with valid credentials.
💡 Bring cash from Xpujil or Chetumal. No ATMs past town.
🎒 8. Before you leave: the honest checklist
✅ Cash — no ATMs after Xpujil
✅ Full tank — Xpujil is your last reliable gas stop
✅ Offline maps — signal disappears inside the Reserve
✅ Early departure — aim to reach the site by 8 AM
✅ Water and food — no restaurants inside the Reserve; a box lunch from your hotel solves this
✅ Closed-toe shoes — uneven terrain throughout the ruins
✅ Insect repellent — non-negotiable
🏡 9. Where to stay
For everything above to work, where you sleep matters.
Casa Ka'an is 5 km from Xpujil — close enough to reach the site early, far enough to feel the jungle. Breakfast starts at 6:15 AM. Box lunches ($120 MXN) are ready before you head out.
