🎒 1. Nobody tells you this part
Most packing lists for Calakmul are written by people who haven’t been to Calakmul.
This one is written from 15 years of watching guests arrive — and from watching some of them struggle through a 4-hour jungle walk because they forgot the one thing that would have made it fine.
Here’s what actually matters.
✅ 2. The non-negotiables
These are not suggestions.
Cash (Mexican pesos)
This is the single most important item on this list. The three entrance checkpoints for Calakmul are cash only. There are no ATMs inside the Reserve. The last reliable ATM is in Xpujil — withdraw before you leave for the site.
Insect repellent
Available in Xpujil pharmacies if you forget, but don’t forget. DEET-based or permethrin-treated clothing works best. During rainy season (May–November), this is especially non-negotiable.
Water — more than you think
There are no shops inside the Reserve. No vending machines at the ruins. Bring at least 2 liters per person for the archaeological site visit alone.
Closed-toe shoes
The ruins involve uneven stone surfaces, roots, and occasional steep climbs. Sandals are a bad idea. Trail runners or hiking shoes are ideal.
Sunscreen
The jungle road is shaded but the ruins are exposed. The heat after 10 AM is significant. Biodegradable sunscreen is preferred — you’re in a protected biosphere.

🔭 3. The thing most guests wish they’d brought
Binoculars.
Every single time. The wildlife on the road to Calakmul — ocellated turkeys, toucans, howler monkeys, the occasional deer — is spectacular up close and completely lost at distance. A basic pair of binoculars transforms the drive entirely.
You can’t buy binoculars in Xpujil. Bring them from home or buy them before arriving in the region.
👕 4. What to wear
Light colors, not dark. Dark clothing absorbs heat and attracts some insects. Light earth tones — beige, khaki, light grey — are better for both comfort and wildlife watching.
Long sleeves for the jungle road. Not because it’s cold — it’s not — but because moving through dense vegetation with bare arms is unpleasant. A lightweight long-sleeve shirt that you can roll up is ideal.
A hat with a brim. Baseball caps work. Wide-brim is better. The sun at the ruins is direct and there’s limited shade.
No bright colors or loud patterns. If you want to see wildlife, you don’t want to announce yourself from 200 meters away.
🍝 5. Food for the day
There are no restaurants inside the Biosphere Reserve. The site has a small rest area but no food service.
The practical solution: order a box lunch from your hotel the night before. At Casa Ka’an, box lunches ($120 MXN) are ready before your early departure — typically before 7 AM.
Otherwise, stock up in Xpujil before heading out. The town has pharmacies, small supermarkets, and a few restaurants that open early.
📵 6. Technology
Download offline maps before you leave Xpujil. Cell signal disappears a few kilometers into the Reserve and doesn’t return until you’re back on Highway 186. Google Maps and Maps.me both work offline.
A portable charger. You’ll take more photos than you expect.
A camera with a zoom lens if you have one. Phone cameras struggle with wildlife at distance. Even a basic telephoto makes a significant difference for bird photography.
💰 7. What you can buy in Xpujil
You don’t need to arrive with everything. Xpujil has:
✅ Insect repellent (pharmacies)
✅ Sunscreen (pharmacies)
✅ Water and snacks (supermarkets, convenience stores)
✅ Cash (ATM in town)
✅ Basic first aid supplies
❌ Binoculars — not available
❌ Specialized gear — not available
❌ International SIM cards — not available
🎟️ 8. Don’t forget the entrance fees
Calakmul has three separate entrance checkpoints, all cash only:
Checkpoint | Nationals | Foreigners |
Ejido Conhuas | $90 MXN | $90 MXN |
CONANP (km 20) | $115 MXN | $225 MXN |
INAH site | $105 MXN | $210 MXN |
Total | ~$310 MXN | ~$525 MXN |
